Hope for Canine Cancer

The Baunji Strong Foundation was established shortly after the loss of Billy Bauer’s beloved canine, Baunji, to osteosarcoma. Given a few short months to live, Baunji astounded the medical experts over the course of the next year and nine months with an “amazing quality of life” that conventional medicine had not seen before.

Our focus in the fight against canine cancer is one of positive messaging while advocating for pet parents, equipping them with the same tools and resources utilized successfully in Baunji’s own journey.

Baunji’s Story

Baunji truly is a Special dog and will always be the love of my life. I remember seeing a picture pop up of this dark brindle pit mix who looked absolutely striking and built like a tank but was set very soon to be euthanized. I remember following the thread on social media and thinking how is this dog set to be put down. Through calling the shelter and missing return calls he was one of 6 to be put down that afternoon. I wasn’t able to speak to someone at the shelter and that evening all 6 were off the list which meant Baunji was gone and I was heartbroken.

Well that next morning on a Saturday I was messaged Baunji was over looked maybe because I called and emailed the shelter many times the Lord saved Baunji. I was to run in a 5K in town but all I thought I wanted to get Baunji and so I left the race, went home to shower and off to Brooklyn I went. When I got into the shelter my eyes filled with tears because I knew Baunji was meant to be with our Family. And he fit right in with my other 2 dogs Baxter and Bailey.

In Late February 2018, my sweet rescue pit bull, “Cookie”, was diagnosed with osteosarcoma. My primary care vet offered “I am very sorry, but your dog has one or two months to live” and sent me home with pain meds. I was devastated.

I cannot remember how I got referred to Billy, but he reached out to me within 45 minutes and very generously spent another good 45 minutes with me on the phone. He was a wealth of knowledge on treatment options, what to expect, as well as helping me to understand that nutrition is a CRUCIAL component. He got me onto a wonderful diet with all the nutritional needs and supplements she required for the optimum fine-tuning of her immune system.

We are now 6 months post-amputation, done with chemo, and have our pre-vaccine screening tomorrow. If all is good, we start the vaccine next Thursday.

Her quality of life is EXCELLENT. My two month diagnosis may turn into years of quality time. I will be forever grateful to Billy for his genuine desire to help those whose beloved pets are facing canine cancer.
